can i use a microcontroller that i would have bought at a place like radio shack to control my lights, tv, and other things like that with just some code and hooking the devices to the microcontroller?

Ended up going with an Arduino Diecimilla. The programming language is very C like. I really need to learn more about circuits, though. LOL!!
